Support Worker (Young Adults Residential Complex Care) – £19,900 – £21,460 per annum

Salary: £19,900 – £21,460 per annum plus enhanced overtime rates

Location: Oakwood Court College, Dawlish EX7 0DE

Hours: 40 hours per week (full-time) with part-time and flexible working considered

Contract: Permanent (52 weeks of the year).

The Daily Routine:

3 x 14 hour shifts per week with days off in-between and every other weekend.

An average shift will start at 8:00am with you helping our young adults complete their morning routine. All of our students attend the college throughout the week, some only do a few days and other may attend more. Part of the shift will be assisting them to their classes and meeting with their tutors.

“I arrive on shift at 8:00am and go to wake the young adult I am supporting that day. On waking the young man I am greeted with moans, groans, statements of regret that it is me supporting him today and a big cheeky grin. After the ritualistic morning banter, I support the young man with verbal prompts to complete his morning routine and prepare himself for college.”

You will spend time with them during lunch, encourage them to spend time with their friends at College before the afternoon session starts. When they return home from college they will have time to do their own leisure activities which can include time on computer consoles, watching TV, contacting and messaging their families, some have outdoor activities, shopping etc which you will assist with. The rest of the evening is relaxed with them spending time to themselves, discussing the day together, perhaps the odd board or card game before medication is given. The final part of the shift is spent record keeping and prepping for the next day. There will then conduct a full handover with the night shift staff who start to arrive around 10pm.

The sleep in staff arrives at 10, I say goodnight to the young man, he thanks me and ask when I’m next in. He gives me a man hug as he puts it and I set off home, tired but content.

This role is not without its challenges, some days may be more intense due to the nature of the young adults conditions. Full classroom based training is given and is also ongoing. Management and seniors also offer additional support on shift.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will, ideally, have already achieved a Diploma or NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care (adults) or equivalent or be excited by the prospect of gaining a recognised qualification with full financial and practical support from us.
  • You will preferably hold a current driving license, be able to remain calm in difficult situations and willing to work sleep ins to cover our 24 hour operations.

Oakwood Court College OCCPLS services provide a unique care and education programme for young people who exhibit a greater level of challenging behaviour than is usually experienced in college settings. Many will have conditions such as autism, mental health or other difficulties. Many have a history of significant complex behaviours and therefore will have a bespoke package to integrate them into the wider college community. Our OCCPLS service is spread over over four houses all in close proximity to Oakwood Court College.
